Labor Day Camping Weekend at Shades State Park and Turkey Run, Friday, Aug 30 2019, 6pm

This is going to be a great weekend. We will be hiking in three spectacular areas: Turkey Run SP, Shades SP, and Pine Hill Nature Preserve.

We will be camping at the Shades State Park. Shades is the smaller quieter cousin of Turkey Run State Park. Just 20 minutes down the road from Turkey Run, Shades boasts many of the same types of sandstone features as Turkey Run on a smaller scale but in a more natural, secluded location. Our campsites will have showers and flush toilets but no electricity. Each site holds up to 6 people, 2 tents, and 1 car and we will be coordinating site assignments closer to the event, based on first come first served basis. There is a parking lot at the campground entrance for extra cars. Shades State Park is about a 3-hour drive from Chicago. There is an entrance fee for $9 per car per visit and the entrance fee is also honored at Turkey Run State Park. So you only pay $9 once.

If you are looking for a ride or can give one, please post it in your RSVP.

We will provide a grilled dinner on Friday night and we’ll have a potluck Saturday night at Shades State Park. The potluck will be at Hickory Shelter. Please bring a dish to pass. You are on your own for all meals, snacks and beverages.

Hiking is optional and we will be leading the following hikes:

  • Saturday morning will be hiking Shades. The beautiful sandstone cliffs overlooking Sugar Creek and numerous shady ravines provide the backdrop for your journey through this nature lover's paradise. Some of the trails are considered "Rugged" to "Very Rugged". Please be prepared for stairs, ladders, etc. We are planning an approximately 5-7 miles hike.

  • Sunday morning, we are headed for the Turkey Run. Deep canyons nestled in the shadows of sandstone cliffs and peaceful hemlock groves harbor some of the most ruggedly beautiful hiking trails in the state. Similar to Shades Park, some of the Turkey Run trails are considered "Rugged" to "Very Rugged". Please be prepared for a 5-7 mile hike with some stairs, ladders, and ravines.

  • Monday morning will be reserved for Pine Hills Nature Preserve. It takes less than 2 hours to hike the full loop of about 3 miles. This hike has lots of stairs and one extremely steep and narrow section. Don’t be afraid of heights.

Covered Bridges: with a total of 31 covered bridges, Parke County is known at the "Covered Bridge Capital of the World". Here is a map if you are interested in checking some of them out.
